Pauline: If the safe opens on a one number combination either one of two things has happened. Someone has set the combination to a single number which can work fine and be easy to open for people who are "directionally challenged"... Or second, someone has removed a part or parts of the lock. I would almost bet that the back cover is missing from the lock case. Bob's mention of asbestos is accurate. A number of safe companies were associated with placing asbestos in their safe insulation or the sealing tape around the door frame. Dave LaBarge
