I am John Pierre Weis's greatgranddaughter. My family built large walk-in bank vaults in the large banks of Europe and U.S. prior to moving the company to the US in 1874. The family was French, but they fled France and changed their name around the time of the French Revolution or the Napolianic Wars. While in exile they started the safe company and kept the name Weis. Tired of the endless wars and conscription, and having as much business on this side of the Atlantic as is Europe, they liquidated their European holdings and came to the U.S. My grandfather Henry, took the technology learned from building these bank vaults and applied it building the first walk-in refrigerators and later air conditioners. The family fortune was lost during the Great Depression. |
