Using the combination 20-40-60 as an example dial as follows:

4 x Right to 20

3 x Left to 40

2 X Right to 60

1 X Left and stop at zero, try to turn the handle to open.


You can also try the 4-3-2 dial and 1 x Left to the dial comes to a stop but hat wouldn't be as common as today's safes on a antique safe.

Also try inverting he Rights and Left such as
4 x Left, 3 xRight, 2 x Left, 1 x Right to stop at zero.
